This is a tradition at Thanksgiving and Easter in the Grillin’ Fools Family – Grilled Ham Slathered in a Wine/Pineapple/Honey Glaze. It’s very simple to do as the ham is already cooked. The ham is like a blank canvas waiting for extra flavor from the glaze and smoke wood, whether you use this exact same recipe or come up with your own combo, I hope you use some variation of this method. I’ll hand this over to Tom to show you how we do Grilled Ham Slathered in a Wine/Pineapple/Honey Glaze…

***Editor’s Note ~ We love this ham recipe, but we’ve also experimented with different iterations. Our latest creation also involved crushed pineapple but also has rum and is used on a spiral sliced ham.
Easter Ham Ingredients:
- 1 can crushed pineapple
- 1.5 cup brown sugar
- .5 bottle white zinfendel or other sweet wine
- .5 cup honey
- 2 tbsp dijon mustard
- 20 lb bone in super trim ham

***Editor’s Note ~ Before you mock the white zin, as was my first inclination, realize the goal is a sweet wine and a half bottle is used. Can’t get much sweeter or cheaper than white zin***
Take out the brown sugar and add more honey to make it paleo.
Combine all the wet ingredients:

How to Make Grilled Ham
Prepare grill for indirect grilling and med to med-low heat – approx 275 – 325 degrees. Place ham on grill, spoon glaze mixture over it, add smoke wood and close the lid. Peach wood is perfect for this with it’s light and subtle flavor. Any of the lighter fruit woods will work such as apple, apricot, or pear. A full run down on more than 50 different things to smoke meat and what they pair best with, can be found here.
Here are a couple closeups on the grilled ham with the topping. When the holiday ham first goes on the grill, it’s not all that appetizing:

Here is the ham on the grill next to a turkey on the Big Green Egg:

Cook the holiday ham approximately three to four hours, spooning additional glaze over the grilled ham every 30 minutes, adding extra fuel and smoke wood as needed.
Here’s the ham after a couple hours:

And here is the holiday ham ready to come off the grill:

***Editor’s Note ~ Feel free to scroll back up and look at at the two pictures of right after the glaze was applied to compare to this. Go ahead. I know you want to. I’ll wait***

BTW, if you want to see how that turkey came out, here it was ready to come off the Big Green Egg:

And the breast being sliced. Juicy enough?

Looks great guys. To be clear, you don’t flip it or move it during the cook? Just leave the ham as is the entire time and add the glaze on the same spot on top?
Scott
That’s correct. Well, if the ham is cooking to high on one end or something, you might move it, otherwise, put it on the grill, baste, a little while later, baste again, and repeat…

Best ham I’ve ever had GF. Great flavor and everyone LOVED it. Thanks, you’re the best! Love your stuff. Can’t wait to try the pot roast and the prime rib.
Roger
When you do this ham, are we talking one of those that you warm up like honey-baked knock-offs? I have never seen an uncooked in the grocery stores.
Scott Thomas
Roger,
Yes, just warm up the ham on the grill instead of the oven. It should be an already cooked ham…

this looks like s great recipe that I would like to try at Xmas. But I am new to smoking and have not tried something this size. I want to be clear that I am using an already cured and cooked ham. I’m not sure what a super trim ham is..I should say I am in the UK …
Scott Thomas
Adrian,
Yes, just go get your standard cured and cooked ham. All you’re doing is adding a ton of flavor from the wine/honey/pineapple and the smoke while warming it up. That’s it. You’ll be great at it. Let me know how it comes out…

That ham looks good. I never even thought about cooking a ham on the grill. Very nice. I have to try this.
Scott Thomas
Jay,
All you have to do is warm up the ham as it is already cured/cooked unless it is a raw ham. Warming it up on the grill adds flavors you can’t hope to get in an oven…

Scott, thanks for replying, much appreciated. 3 hours seems a long time to heat but I guess it’s in indirect heat.
Happy Christmas from this side of the pond…
Scott Thomas
Adrian,
Yeah, you don’t go real hot. 250f is about all you need. And keep slathering as you go.
Happy Christmas to you too!

using a half bone in ham, should I cover cut end with foil so as not to dry out
Scott Thomas
Mary,
Just place the cut end flat on a cookie/baking sheet. Foil would work too…

Laurie Trevino
Can you do this with a gas grill? How?
Scott Thomas
Laurie,
Sure you can. Just turn one burner on on one side, set it to low, and put the ham on the other side…
